Dear Family and Visitors,
Q: So, what do you do?
A: Where should we begin? There are Sisterhood events, meant to foster a bond of sisterhood among members and let us get to know each other better. We hold study hours, reward good grades, reserve study rooms during Finals to reach our high Scholarship standards. Social events we plan include Exchanges, which are opportunities to meet others in the Greek system, and Dances, ranging from informal to formal. Most dear to our hearts, we host and participate in various philanthropic events as part of our Service. We also have weekly meetings, to deal with the chapter business, enjoy each other's company, and keep members informed.
Q: Where’s the keg?
A: Nowhere to be found. KKG has a strict alcohol policy, which we follow at all times. All events where there is alcohol require third-party service and security. Underage drinking is not permitted at any events, and chapter funds are never used to purchase alcohol.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: After Kappas pay dues at the beginning of the term, events are free. Basically, you are prepaying for all of the fun you will have later. We manage to keep costs low, and the budget must always be approved by the entire chapter before dues are collected. We understand the financial constraints of being in university, and offer payment plans to all members and new members.
Q: Do you have time to do anything else?
UC San Diego is an academically rigorous school, and we know our girls have a lot of outside responsibilities as well. Very very few of our events are mandatory. We've found that by allowing our girls to decide what they have time for, everybody benefits. Unlike some collegiate organizations, Zeta Nu does not penalize members for having other commitments. We ask to be contacted so we don't worry, but we want all Kappa events to be fun for our girls, not a burden.
Q: What’s the initiation?
A: That is secret to members only. But we can assure you that there is no hazing at any time, to new members or actives. All of the ritual of KKG is meant to be significant, empowering, and meaningful to members, not to cause emotional stress.
Q: Is there a Kappa House?
A: UC San Diego does not yet have Greek housing. Members live in their own accommodations, and our meetings are held on campus or near campus with transportation provided. This goes for the other sororities and fraternities as well.
We’d like to alleviate some worries you may have about sororities, and dispel some myths surrounding them as well. There is much more to our organization than what you have seen on TV or in the movies. We come from many different faculties and backgrounds, with different interests, political views and religious beliefs. We have joined KKG to make the best of our time at UC San Diego, and in the process, have made friends that will last a lifetime.
We hope the following information helps you to better understand Kappa Kappa Gamma. If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact us.
Thank you for your time,
Zeta Nu Chapter
